Habbo Goes Global
Habbo around the world.

2003 · GLOBAL EXPANSION
By 2003, Habbo had grown far beyond its Finnish beginnings. The year marked a major turning point as Sulake began bringing the hotel to completely new parts of the world. Japan launched in February, followed by Spain in September, Italy in November and Sweden in December, bringing four new communities into the growing Habbo network.
Each new hotel had its own character and visual identity. The Japanese hotel, for example, featured landmarks such as Mount Fuji, Tokyo Tower and a Shinkansen in its hotel view, while the Spanish, Italian and Swedish hotels each received their own distinctive environments. These weren't simply translated versions of the same website — each community felt like its own little corner of the Habbo world.
Inside the hotels, the community was developing just as quickly. The Welcome Lounge was introduced in January, giving new players a dedicated public room where they could meet other Habbos and learn their way around the hotel. At the same time, furniture collecting and trading were becoming an increasingly important part of the culture.
2003 was also a particularly interesting year for rare furniture. The catalogue rare collection was still in its infancy, with Holiday Romance, Aloe Vera, Petal Patch, Hammock and Parasol appearing throughout the year. Aloe Vera has an especially unusual history: originally known as Small Plant, it had appeared through scripting before being redesigned and officially released as a rare in March 2003.
Behind the scenes, Sulake was also learning how to manage a rapidly growing international community. Research based on Sulake's own 2003 historical records describes 2002–2003 as a period when the company was developing the hotel, its business model and its community simultaneously, while partnerships, advertising and new moderation systems were becoming increasingly important.
By the end of 2003, Habbo had transformed from a small Finnish virtual hotel into a genuinely international social world. Four new hotels had opened in a single year, furniture collecting was developing into its own culture, and players from increasingly different countries were meeting inside the same pixelated world.
2003 wasn't just another year for Habbo — it was the year the hotel started becoming global.
