2018 · MODERN HABBO By 2018, Habbo had become a remarkably different world from the small virtual hotel that launched in Finland eighteen years earlier. The furniture catalogue had grown into an enormous library of styles, from classic sofas and Thrones to elaborate fantasy environments, futuristic laboratories and detailed Japanese gardens. Rather than one huge technological change defining the year, 2018 was about the Hotel's mature ecosystem coming together: furniture campaigns, crafting, room bundles, Marketplace trading, community competitions and increasingly elaborate player-built rooms. The year began with a nostalgic touch. January's campaign deliberately celebrated Classic Habbo, bringing back room bundles inspired by old public rooms including the Classic Star Lounge, Habburgers, HC Club, Library and Tea Room. It was a nice reminder that even as Habbo continued to evolve, its older furniture and room designs still had a place in the modern Hotel. Then came Friendship Fusion during the March Easter Garden campaign. This introduced an unusual crafting system designed to bring old and new players together. Players with accounts created before 2018 received Old Timer Ducks, while players who joined in 2018 received New Timer Ducks. The two types of ingredients had to be combined to craft special clothing items. It was a surprisingly clever idea: Habbo turned the age of your account into part of the gameplay. Veteran and newer players actually needed each other to complete the recipes. 2018 was also packed with wildly different visual worlds. April's Movie Madness transformed Habbo into a collection of film sets, with furniture inspired by Wild West, military, Jurassic and police themes. Players could even compete to redesign a Wild West room bundle, with the winning design receiving official recognition and rewards. June brought Coral Kingdom, one of the year's most visually distinctive campaigns. The new furniture line was entirely underwater-themed, filled with coral structures, sea creatures and colourful aquatic architecture. Contemporary screenshots from June 2018 show just how elaborate these rooms could become. 🎂 Habbo turns 18 In July, Habbo celebrated its 18th birthday. Instead of simply releasing an anniversary rare, players were given three possible designs and asked to vote for their favourite. The winner became the Habbo 18 Throne, which was released on July 30 for 75 Credits + 75 Diamonds. The other proposed designs were a birthday cake and a recreation of the Hotel View. That is actually a perfect piece of history for Habbopix because the community itself helped decide what the anniversary furniture would become. Later in the year came Tokyo, Zen Garden, Infected Laboratory and Hygge in Habbo, showing just how broad Habbo's furniture design had become. The Hygge campaign in November was particularly charming. Inspired by the Danish concept of hygge, it contained only four new catalogue furniture pieces — a log burner, mattress, armchair and shelf — deliberately focusing on a warm, cosy atmosphere rather than a huge furniture collection. And then December closed the year with Winter City Festival, combining winter festival furniture, room bundles, crafting, an advent calendar and the Big Habbo Christmas Game, which gave players a new Christmas-themed game to complete each day leading up to Christmas. Looking across the entire year, something becomes obvious. Habbo had stopped being defined by one type of room. In 2004, you might have built a simple lounge. By 2018, the same furniture system could produce an underwater kingdom, Japanese garden, film studio, infected laboratory, Christmas festival or cosy Scandinavian home. The catalogue had effectively become a visual language. And the players had become fluent in it.
