2023 · EXPERIMENTATION By 2023, Habbo was living in two worlds at once. The traditional Hotel continued exactly as players knew it: new furniture, seasonal campaigns, Builders Club, Wired games, quests and a huge community of room builders. At the same time, Sulake was developing Habbo X, a new Web3-focused experience built around player ownership, NFT rooms and user-created content. The main Hotel itself continued producing a huge variety of furniture throughout the year. Hanami brought Japanese spring gardens in March, followed by the solarpunk-inspired Habbo's Eco World in April and Cat Cafe in May. Later campaigns included University New Beginnings, Habbos in NYC, Autumn Fashion Shoot, Tombs of Egypt, Habbo Constellations and Chocolate Emporium. 🌱 A greener Hotel April's Habbo's Eco World was particularly interesting from a furniture perspective. The campaign used a solarpunk aesthetic, combining futuristic technology with plants, recycling and renewable energy. Furniture such as solar panels and recycling-themed items made the campaign feel noticeably different from the fantasy-heavy collections of previous years. It was another example of how Habbo furniture had evolved into something capable of telling an entire story. A solar panel wasn't just a decoration. A recycling bin wasn't just a prop. Together, they could turn an ordinary room into an entire imagined world. 🧑‍💻 Habbo X But the biggest experiment of 2023 was happening outside the traditional Hotel. Habbo X had entered its first alpha in December 2022, and development continued throughout 2023. Early in the year, owners of Genesis Habbo X rooms began accumulating the ecosystem's currency and upgrading their rooms. By mid-2023, Furni Factories had been introduced, along with a new Navigator. The idea behind Furni Factories was particularly ambitious. A Habbo X room could actually produce NFT furniture. Genesis rooms were assigned factories that could generate exclusive furniture, creating a system where the room itself became a kind of production facility. This was a dramatic evolution of an idea that had existed since the earliest days of Habbo: You own a room → you decorate it → you use it to create something. Now the room could actually produce something that existed as an independently owned digital asset. Habbo X was also experimenting with blueprints and sandbox building, with the long-term idea of allowing players to freely experiment with furniture, save their creations and potentially sell those builds to other players. 🧑‍🎨 Crafted Avatars The Web3 side of Habbo also evolved. In June 2023, Habbo released Crafted Avatars, allowing owners of Habbo Avatars to create new variations and customise their traits. This was part of Sulake's broader attempt to give Habbo's NFT ecosystem more utility rather than leaving the avatars as simple collectible images. This was also where the philosophy behind Habbo X became clearer. Habbo wasn't simply trying to sell digital furniture. It was experimenting with a world where rooms, furniture and avatars could all potentially become things players created, owned and traded. 🪑 And the traditional furniture world continued What's interesting is that none of this replaced ordinary Habbo. The regular Hotel was still releasing Limited Edition Rares, crackables and huge furniture campaigns. In 2023 alone, Limited Edition pieces included the Steampunk Habberge Egg, Investment Gold Fountain, Prairie Plane, Rainbow Icecream LTD, Big Apple Habberge Egg, Hibernating Autumn Bear, Perfect Oasis and Artisanal Chocolate Carousel. So the Hotel's traditional furniture economy was still very much alive. You could be collecting a Throne or a new LTD in the normal Hotel while somewhere else in the Habbo ecosystem, another player was experimenting with NFT rooms and Furni Factories. That contrast makes 2023 particularly interesting. 🌌 Two possible futures By the end of the year, Habbo had essentially created two different visions of what its future could look like. The traditional Hotel represented more than twenty years of accumulated culture: classic furniture, rares, badges, fansites, room building and nostalgia. Habbo X represented an experiment in ownership, creation and Web3. Neither completely replaced the other. And that's probably the most important thing about 2023. Habbo was no longer trying to move in only one direction. It was experimenting with what the next generation of pixel worlds could actually be. For The Pixel Room, this is a particularly interesting moment because the furniture you're preserving suddenly had another layer of meaning. The thousands of objects created over the previous two decades weren't just historical decorations — they were becoming the foundation for new experiments in how digital objects could be created, collected and owned. Twenty-three years after the first Hotel opened, the pixels were still evolving.
